My EM - is it is? (few doctors in Russia know about EM so I have no official diagnosis)

In a single serve blender cup:

7 ice cubes
15 blueberries
fill with water until all ice is floating
add 1 full scoop of cocao powder
tablespoon of coconut flakes
tablespoon of raisins
1/4 avocado

Blend and add a bit more water if necessary it will be creamy and you need to use a spoon to eat it.

Enjoy!

Thank you a lot!!! I will try tomorrow

Digestion itself causes EM flaring. The parasympathetic nervous system is active at night and during digestion. Itā€™s the ā€œrest & digest systemā€. When the parasympathetic nervous system is active blood vessels dilate making EM symptoms worse. When the sympathetic nervous system predominates blood vessels are restricted. Which is why EM symptoms are typically lessened during the day and worse at night or following a large meal.

Greater digestive stress and parasympathetic activation following the reintroduction of foods long eliminated is the near certain cause of your increased dietary burning. There is no food substance known to worsen EM symptoms other than capsaicin, the active component of chili peppers. Capsaicin causes blood vessels to dilate.

Hi Vinny, howā€™s your week so far?

You have such great energy and I really appreciate you sharing with me. Iā€™m a foody too, but pretty idiosyncratic, meaning Iā€™ve never followed anyoneā€™s diet or been someone who is into fads, etc. I live in California and have access to the most amazing food. In fact, my pecan tree has a huge harvest this year, so weā€™ve been collecting hundreds of pecans and using them for as many things as we can. I have lots of food loves, but I just have no desire for stuff thatā€™s not quality. Iā€™ll eat at my favorite Taqueria, as well as make organic vegan meals, etc.

Anyway, your issue with fearing diabetes is so interesting. Have you talked to a mental health specialist ever about it? It seems like something you could work on with cognitive behavior therapy. It seems like itā€™s making a big impact on your life but also like something you can make progress on with some good strategies. Believe me, I know the struggle of mental health stuffā€“itā€™s so hard!

Love that youā€™re into motorcycles! I totally get it that the wind makes you feel so good. Even on my bike, going just like 15 mph, feeling the cool air is everything. I love the freedom of being on my bike, and a motorcycle is so powerful and free. Youā€™re Wonder Woman!

Iā€™m having a decent week with my feet. My hands have been pretty much fine this year, but you should see them. From my nuckles to my finger tips is permanently red. I have to be super careful in the winter not to let them get too cold or else I end up with chilblains that can be treacherous, but my hands are way easier to protect than my feet. My feet are a shit-show

Itā€™s nice to be in touch with you. Your English is excellent, so donā€™t even worry about that. When you have a chance, tell me more about where you live. Iā€™ve never been to Russia and I donā€™t really travel, but I love learning about other cultures.

I hope youā€™re feeling good and really appreciate you :))))

Oh! And, I love you calling me Monkey, such a cute nickname, right? My name is Eve, but you can totally call me Monkey. Or Eve. Whatever you like. I can call you Wonder Woman, lol.

Hello, Eve! What a beautiful name you have - I really appreciate your name))

My name is Julia (ā€œŠ®Š»Šøяā€ in Russian spelling)

Oh, you write about a pecan tree you have - I have never seen any such tree in real live. What food you usually take in your favorite Taqueria you mentioned? What dishes you make with pecan?

Unfortunately, here in Russia the quality of food in supermarkets and restaurants really-really sucks, especially after 2015 when european food mostly became unavailable in our shops due to some crazy political issues ā€¦ We have a lot of fake dairy products, they add palm or coconut oil in cheese to reduce production costs. But we have some nice italian restaurants here with pretty tasty Arabiatta and Spaghetti Aglio, and a lot of russians go to Finland (it is very close to St Petersburg where I live) for food shopping, but now borders are closed because of covid 19. We also have very nice vegan shops where we can but nuts, seeds, whole grains, spices, etcā€¦

Are you vegan? You mentioned organic vegan meals )

I love to hear that you enjoy riding a bike!! I have never tried to ride a bike, only motorcycleā€¦
You called me Wonder Woman, wow, it is so nice! I appreciate this!

You wrote about your fingers - the same are mine - constantly red and also they are almost permanently swollen (( EM and Raynaudā€™s are really bad thingsā€¦ I also have to be careful not to get my fingers too cold in the winter and I usually put 2 pairs of glovesā€¦ Do you have cold winters in California?

I am looking forward to hear from you, Eve and wish you a nice day!!! Thank you again for your answer

Hi Vinny! Iā€™m glad you posted  My problems began when I developed anorexia when I was 11 years old, however initially it was only Raynauds. The funny thing is, I think it was the immediate ā€˜bodily shock\traumaā€™ of weight loss rather than nutritional or cold-induced nerve damage that caused it, because the symptoms began so so suddenly when I lost weight.
Unfortunately, the anorexia dragged on for about 10 years, and the raynauds became worse over each winter during this time. I think I developed nerve damage as a consequence of shutting off bloodflow, and I also developed pots-like symptoms (blood pooling when I stand). My skin generally looked mottled and grey\blue if I wasnā€™t moving around or very warm in the summer for example. This persisted even during the times breif times when my weight was ok. My hands would go red when I held them by my sides because of blood pooling, but I had no EM flares yet. Almost always ice cold.

The EM flares began for me during the last Winter. I think it was a combination of progressive damage of nevres in my hands due to raynauds +cold, and also hormones (I had regained my period in October 2019, for the first time in over 10 years).

Having a low blood sugar can contribute to nerve damage, so I would definitely encourage you to seek therapy for your phobia. I have had severe OCD in the past also so I understand how tricky compulsions like this can be, but it will probably also be a huge relief and give you more headspace if you can work on this- and a different diet may help your hands and feet.

Incidentally, when my ED began I also avoided carbs (and saturated fats), mostly eating fruit/veggies, chicken/cod, and nuts.
Last year, I was noticing that high carb meal triggered my flares, but this year carbs have made no difference but cacao certainly triggers it. Actually, at the start of January I got a stomach flu for a couple of days, and that made me completely averted to any animal products. So I have unintentionally been vegan for almost a month (=lots of carbs!) and yet I have hardly been flaring. My POTS symptooms haven;t been good though.

Really hope you find a good doctor!

Hi, mitmit!

I am glad to hear from you!

Iā€™m sorry to hear about your Raynaud and anorexia issues, and I agree that it was rather stress/shock induced damage from unexpected sudden weight loss, than something nutritional or connected with coldā€¦ In my case I cannot determine up until now - was it nutritional (due to my rapid swings from diet to binge, from high-protein to almost no protein high-carbs diet) or psychological (mother`s death and aggravation of my obsessive-compulsive blood sugar checking, dieting and compulsive exercising after her death) ā€¦ Now I cannot pinpoint any food to EM flares, the same food can sometimes trigger severe EM or conversely calm the flare downā€¦

What about blood sugar issues, now I eat mostly carbs (simple sugars as well because of the mental boost they give me) and I gave away my glucometer, so I think I have some improvements on this matter ))

What is interesting for me is that why Raynaudā€™s is often associated with anorexia, what connection can be ? ā€¦ Maybe weight loss causes some imbalance in autonomic or hormonal control of blood vessels ā€¦ I know that we have a structure in our brain - a hypothalamus, which controls hunger and feeding behaviour and body temperature as well (we lose heat via sweating or skin vessels dilation) - so maybe it is hypothalamic way to conserve energy in stressful situation (hunger) somehow? ā€¦ Anyway, it is just a guessā€¦ I need to make a research on this question ā€¦

Eve, I really love you calling me Wonder Woman, but I think I look more like a Ghost Rider )))

Hahaha, I feel that. Ghost Rider is a badass name!

Howā€™s your condition been this week?

Iā€™m not vegan but I eat pretty much vegetarian. I LOVE meat, especially American bbq and Korean BBQ, but just for ethical reasonsā€”animals and climateā€”I donā€™t eat a lot of meat. Thereā€™s so much now to make it easy to cook without it and still be really fulfilled.

As for the pecans, I like to roast them with butter and then theyā€™re so good! Mostly I eat them roasted, but theyā€™re so good as a topping, like with with roasted veggies, like Brussels sprouts, etc. And also so great with apples, raw or baked.

I had a really sweet bike ride today. Just the right clothing/shoes and cool temps, so no flaring, yay!

So interesting to learn about your life in Russia. Do you live in a city? Yeah, I never take for granted how lucky I am to have the food we have in California. Unfortunately, we also live in terrible drought conditions, and America being America, we still waste so much water! Itā€™s scary.

I hope youā€™re feeling good. Is your name Vinny or is that a nickname? I love it.

Oh! I re-read and I see you live in St. Petersburg. What kinds of agriculture grows around there? The dairy situation sounds terrible. I hope you can get some decent cheese soon.

And: some parts of California, like the high Sierras, have snow and real winter temperatures. Where I live in Northern California, it can be in the high 30s in the early mornings but itā€™s mostly in the 50s here during winter, which is good for me. I have to be careful not to get caught in the cold, even high 40ā€™s can cause bad chilblains and frost-burns on my hands and feet.

Summer is awful in Sacramento, though. Itā€™s a valley and usually 100+ degrees all summer, so I have to stay mostly indoors with air conditioning. I still ride my bike in summer but I wear cycling sandals and I have to be home by 8:00 AM. Even then, it can already be close to 80 outside! :rage:

So have you really never ridden a bicycle? You look so cool standing next to your bike! Looks powerful. Do you take rides with other bikers or mostly alone?

Hi, Eve!

This week I eat a lot, so my energy levels boosted up and I have less blood pooling, what about EM - somehow it reacts to the food I eat, activities I undertake and my mental state, but I have noticed that the more I engaged in something interesting for me - the less I notice it, despite the fact that it still hereā€¦ Usually, I have almost no sweat, but tonight I sweated heavily - I was surprised, I don`t know why ā€¦ And I also noticed that when I sweat - EM manifests lessā€¦ Both my feet and hands were bright red and burning most of the time during this week, but I managed to pay less attention to it this weekā€¦

How are you?

Roasted pecans - it sounds tasty! I have never tried to roast them, usually I eat them raw, add them to my porridge or just by itself)

I chose Vinny nickname because my last name is Vinogradova and my friends dubbed me Vinny (like Winnie the Pooh) For them my last name and Winnie the Pooh sounds alike.

I love your nickname as well! Why have you chosen Monkey?

I live in the center of the city, there is a nice view from my window)) A lot of snow today here

I love to hear that you enjoy your bike and had a nice ride! I have tried to ride a bike once when I was a child - but with no great success so I stoppedā€¦ But now I am reading your message and understand that I actually want to try it again!

Usually I ride alone, but sometimes together with friends - actually it is not my bike on this photo! It is my friend`s bike, more powerful than mine - I have BMW 310R (just 31 horse powers)

What about agriculture, here we cultivate potatos, carrots, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and many other veggies. Also grains, we have a lot of apple trees, cherry trees and many others)) Dairy situation sucks, as well as the quality of the meat, eggs and poultry because russians try to decrease costs as much as they can and protein food quality is so-so, combined with Russian import ban on EU products - I mean lack of competition on food market (dairy especially) we get what we have - fake dairy and so onā€¦ Fish is ok, thoughā€¦ But we have decent nuts, veggies, fruit, bread, grains, etc)) So vegan people would feel good hereā€¦ Finland and Estonia (the closest EU countries to St Petersburg) are our saviors in terms of good cheese and other dairy))

I just realized that we use different temperature scales, in USA there are Fahrenheit, but here we use Celcius. This week the temperature here was 5 Fahrenheit here in SPb! Really cold! We also can have 100+ in Summer, the same as in Sacramentoā€¦

PS Oh, I should mention about dairy that not all that bad! Quality is bad only in the majority of supermarkets. But we have a lot of private farmers outside the city who make perfect dairy and you can order delivery to your apartment or just visit them and buy good eggs, milk, poultry, etc

Hey Vinnie, letā€™s start emailing directly, okay? Hereā€™s my email: eveimagine@comcast.net. Send me a quick email and Iā€™ll reply to your last emails then. Sound okay?

Hello, Eve! Yes sure!

Iā€™m going to piggyback off of @CarterDK here and agree with him. This diet is very vitamin and nutrient deficient. The lack and fruits and vegetables is concerning in addition to a high iron diet from eating meat at every meal. This alone could induce neuropathy and weaken the immune system (not good with a global pandemic in the midst). I would even be worried about scurvy with the negligible amount of vitamin C in the diet plan above. Obviously I am in no position to tell someone what or how to eat, that is not the point of my comment. I am only saying something because this is being recommended to another individual. Please, everyone, ask your physician about changing to an extreme diet plan like this because this could cause serious issues for some individuals, if not all, further down the line.

Hi JoeShmoe,

I also agree with the sentiment of donā€™t take advice from people on the internet too seriously. My post wasnā€™t meant to instruct others to follow a rigid plan. It was more so a post about what helps me and it includes a note about the fruits that I eat. Maybe that would be helpful for others? I didnā€™t mention supplements because that wasnā€™t the point of my post. The point was ā€œlow burnā€ foods and meal timing for me.

Cheers,

D

Again, digestion is a trigger for EM symptoms. A bowl of spinach or baked potato is not anymore problematic for EM than a steak. If youā€™ve gotten that into your head, you are mistaken. Correlation is not causation.

It should be made clear to all members: a well balanced diet does not worsen or cause EM symptoms. Everyone should eat a well balanced diet with multiple servings of varied fruits and vegetables per day.
