Hi. I have several years of TMJ pain. Orthodontist states my left jaw is grating bone on bone…But for the past week the pain seems to be intensifying out of all proportion. Upper and Lower teeth, on left side are so sensitive. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow. Has anyone had these symptoms? TIA
Hi,
This is fascinating to me. Many years ago I had the same at first they said it was my teeth causing the problem and said the best option was to remove all of them, which I had done and have regretted ever since as afterwards I had so much trouble with dentures as my gums used to swell and then they wouldn’t fit. Then an ENT specialist said it was sinus problems and I think he was right or maybe a coincidence that when I moved to the coast it went away completely. At the time when I told the ENT specialist that I was moving to the coast he said it was the best thing I could do as the air quality was so much better. I don’t know if it was related to my later development of EM.
Hi @sheltielife I have EM on my face so will bear that in mind. Will let you know how I get on to mix.
Me again @sheltielife Dr told me he didn’t have a clue. He’s always upfront, knowledgeable and truthful. He’s given me Norgesic for the pain. Am seeing specialist dentist on 7/2. Also seeing Dermatologist for these rashes/sores I get after each severe flare. Bit down - but I know there many EM peeps worse than me.
YuHi again @sheltielife - the dentist has made me three appliances-2 for the night and one for the day (lower jaw) it is painful but I have Norgesic. This because of severe TMJ on both sides, but the left side is bone on bone. The dentist hopes muscle mass will return. I have to eat with bottom one in so it’s very restrictive. I will wear them for 13 weeks!
These are the night ones. Very sore. The jaw pain is not Trigeminal Neuralgia but EM. When I get flares on the left side of my face, the jaw pain is intolerable. The whole nose and burning mouth as well, and right ear
Hi
Just off to sleep now it’s 1am Ouch that sounds awful. Will write tomorrow.
Nothing much more to say than last night, but they don’t look at all nice to wear. Plus not being able to eat what you want isn’t nice. Good luck 13 weeks is a long time. Just hope it works in the end.
I was thinking of doing that as the pain is really terrible @CarolynK if these things don’t work.
I agree don’t have anything done with your teeth just yet. Explore other things rather than that. Once these things are done there is no going back.
Ok @sheltielife Will give it a good think.
I don’t smirk it was just an emoticon. I do really believe. A good way to check re teeth or even temple headaches, is with your thumb and pointer finger - massage your Massetar Muscle inside. Press quite hard inside your mouth with thumb and outside with pointer finger. The pain in my teeth, gum, jaw, Inc temple grace disappeared. It does help a little to put SM33 on gums and side of inside mouth.
I have very sensitive teeth even back when I was young and healthy. Braces were very painful, more than for most people.
But now, years into EM, I have learned to never let them give me the shots during dental work. If they do, it feels like the needle is still in there. Sometimes for a year! The pain of the irritated nerves is simply not worth it. So I take lortab before i go in and use the nitrous oxide gas.
It’s better than the after affects of the needle.
Interestingly, my dentist has another patient with EM who has the same problem.
I hope you find relief. I have mild TMJ, and someone taught me that a certain massage helps somewhat. You open your mouth slightly and put your fingers above the joint, sort of near the ear, then rub downwards.
Start softly to make sure it doesn’t make it worse, then increase pressure if you tolerate it ok. I do both sides at once to keep from pushing my jaw to the side too much.
I wish you all the luck in finding things that help!
Thx @Cindy2 I am the same. I went to the dentist as a kid and adult without the need for any needles. Our dentist was that good.
I am now absolutely terrified of any dental work. I will utilise what you use and hope…
