Amitriptyline.....please help

For those who have tried Amitriptyline, did your redness get worse before it got better? or is this something that will not work for me? It has helped me with the pain but the redness/flares are still there. I know that everyone is different.

Thanks,

Jennifer

I was given a low dose of 10mg Amitriptyline at the beginning of my EM before my feet got to the state they are in now. It was given to help me sleep at first but didn't do much so my GP said to double the dose. After several days all symptoms of my EM had disappeared and thought a miracle had occured. The fan went back in the cupboard and the shoes came out again.

However.........after a month or so the symptoms gradually reappeared and have never gone away despite trying an even higher dose.

I stopped taking it for a long time but am now back on 35mg daily, again to help with sleep (it does, but not much).

My feet have gradually got worse and are now permanently discoloured red/purple or the bright red of a flare. It is gradually creeping up my legs now to the lower calf.

Not what you want to hear I'm sure, but it may work for you if you can find the right amount to take. I really hope you do. Some people take a lot more than my dose I'm sure.

Good luck.

Tilly.

i havent tried amitriptyline for EM (i was using it as a kid for depression) but i think if it helps you with the pain id stay at it. who cares about redness ;)) id keep using it and if the pain get worse again in the future id increase the dosage or try something else.

>tillyp : sorry to hear about your pain, i know how it feels, the moment when you thought the miracle has happend and then the hell is back at you. stay strong, im sending good (and cool) vibes your way. :) xoxo Liz

I am on amitriptyline and it did not increase redness or swelling. I am going to (eventually) sound like a broken record but I cannot underestimate the improvement I’ve had from juicing. I have a masticating juicer and in the morning on an empty stomach juice. Included are organic beets, carrots, kale, spinach, small piece of an apple. I also try to refrain from drinking alcohol and eat anti-inflammatory foods. I am getting better - it seems almost every day! I swear by it! Anyone trying it must give it 3 full months. At first I just noticed my feet were less swollen and my body temperature was lower. I believe it is positively worth trying!

I've been on Amitriptyline for years. I was on 10 mg for a long time and never had redness getting worse. I now take 20 mg.

I guess you need to re-evaluate with your Dr. if this is right for you.

Good luck!

hi Jennifer

I was put on 10mg Amitriptyline and did not notice much change. Simultaneously I got hold of 5%Amitriptyline from Specialist Pharmacy in london thanks to mnp who told me how to go about it. I got more redness heat and swelling with the cream but dont know if that was due to having a large meal in the evening as I applied the cream just before. I then had a huge inflammation of the legs and have been on antibiotics ever since. There is also some thought that small scale pharmacies are not always sterile. So my picture is muddled. I have a sense that the Amitriptyline tab has done some good so I will up to 20 and so on up to 50 mgs, changing dose fortnightly. I will then post my findings. I think it is worth having a good go for some three months or so.

Good luck!

Denni, what's your diet like the rest of the day? I have found eating a large meal sets off flares - I think it's something about a lot of sugar getting into the bloodstream all at once. Interested to hear more about juicing if you have time - did you do an earlier post?

Hi Jennifer - I am newly diagnosed and was given Amitriptyline. Unfortunately, this drug has not helped me with the pain or the redness. I know it can be trial and error for many people with different medications. Don't give up hope - I know there are other medications out there to try.

Hi Frances, miy diet the rest of the day...i often make a smoothie with the pulp from the vegetables and don't eat much meat period. i eat very healthy foods and try to stick with an anti-inflammatory diet. i had a lot of inflammation. my feet are much less swollen and other EM symptoms are improving but i've been juicing for 8 or so months. the key is to juice on an empty stomach and i buy organic. attached is my story - it's rather long but i couldn't decide what to exclude since my journey has been a long one. i hope this or the information in my story helps - you and others!

Hi Denni

Youve mentioned anti-inflammatory foods once or twice. Scuse my ignorance but what are these? Do have some examples? Blessings ajh

i have just gone online but here are some:

  • Salmon
  • Trout
  • Albacore tuna
  • Walnuts
  • Brazil nuts
  • Almonds

Wild fish tends to have more omega-3 fatty acids than do farm raised fish.

there are some other foods including vegetables, flax seed and some nuts that have anti-inflammatory properties. i hope this is helpful!
