Eating for EM

Hi,
Just wondering what you guys eat? Almost everything triggers my feet.

Hi Michelle,

When my EM first kicked off it was wild and almost constant. It’s taken me years to work out what I needed to avoid & some of the things were more or less the basis of my diet at the time so it’s taken some adjustment! I already had allergies and intolerances so I already avoided some foods but I’ll give you a summary of what I avoid:

Eggs & peanuts (allergies), lactose (intolerance), gluten, anything with spicy heat like chillies, paprika, ginger, radishes, and also garlic & onions. I’m currently cautiously seeing if I can reintroduce garlic and onion via infused oil/powders but haven’t had either in normal form yet. I’ve mostly used leeks in the place of onions and/or just cut them out of recipes. It’s not ideal but my palate has adjusted over time. I now tend to use a lot of fresh herbs to make sure there’s some flavour.

Rather than just list what I avoid I’ll also give you an idea of what I’d typically eat in a day:

Gluten free oat porridge with fruit and a splash of lactose free milk or a gluten free cereal like Nutribrex with fruit and lactose free milk and Greek yogurt.

A sandwich made with gluten free bread and/or a soup made without onions, garlic or spices eg carrot & coriander made with fresh coriander.

Rice with chicken and tarragon (lactose free) cream sauce/grilled salmon, miso veg and rice/potatoes, veg & roasted meat or fish/gluten free pasta with a sauce made with plenty of fresh herbs but no garlic or onions.

I also stopped drinking alcohol.

I don’t know if this info will be helpful or not as I guess we all probably have different triggers but I think the key thing for me was thinking of cutting out foods & drinks that were overly ‘stimulating’. It took years of trial and error and adjustment, along with other management techniques but my EM has hugely improved so please don’t give up hope. Good luck!

Hi, Ive found that lowering sodium and sugar help. It might be good to avoid gluten even if you dont have an intolerance, your body can have a sensitivity. Spicy food could cause inflammation in your gut that could trigger EM. Caffeine is a big one for me.
